Selection Criteria

The following three selection criteria and the assessment indicators listed thereafter are suitable for all applicants to PERSWADE

Criterion 1

Whenever possible, the applicant is strongly encouraged (cf. assessment indicators given below) to propose work on an industrial partner-oriented research project, preferably with a pre-approved topic that MUST in all cases fall in one of our three main WNS inter-twined research clusters: Smart Communications (5G Technologies, Wireless Cloud, Sensor Networks, Internet of Things, Green ICT, etc.); Smart Monitoring (Health and Safety, Environment, Renewable Energies, Natural Resources, Infrastructures, etc.); Smart Management (Transport Systems and Vehicles, Resources and Power Grids, Urban Development and Cities, Hospitals, Offices and Homes, Production, Distribution and Services, etc.). This should be clearly demonstrated in the application and accompanying documents.

Criterion 2

The Applicant must show that his/her proposed research project includes significant plans for collaboration which involves time spent on the internships, exposure to novel disciplines and ideas, and expansion of his/her professional and industrial network. This should be clearly demonstrated in his/her application and accompanying documents.


Criterion 3

The Applicant must make sure that he/she has fully understood PERSWADE’s Program Guide before drafting his/her application, must be willing to agree to the “General Terms and Conditions of PERSWADE Funding” (refer to Appendix 1 in the Program Guide) if selected, and must have submitted his/her complete application before the prescribed deadline.

If the Applicant can meet the above criteria 1, 2 and 3, his/her application will be first assessed by PERSWADE’s Evaluation Committee based on the Assessment Indicators given below. The Applicant who passes this first-round evaluation might be convened to semi-structured interviews if required.


Assessment Indicators


1. Academic excellence
– Academic background, grades, awards, grants, etc.


2. Research experience/potential (refer to CV and reference letters)
– Research interest, background, record, impact, scope, etc.


3. Relevance/timeliness of research topic and fit with PERSWADE’s scope


4. Project’s level of integration within an industrial project/contract


5. Industry-hosted internship planning and integration levels with respect to the proposed project


6. Student’s industrial mentorship/co-supervision
